We are planning to begin using data from the LC Name Authority in our CMS Parties module. Specifically, we're interested in recording the LC Control Number and the Heading as they appear in the LC Name Authority record. I know that KE has developed a Parties module tab for capturing ULAN data, but has anyone had KE develop a similar Parties module tab to capture LC Name Authority (or other authority) data?

At Te Papa we've starting looking at how we can map and link out to existing person Authority records available on the web, eg ULAN, Dictionary of New Zealand Biography etc. Our first clumsy attempt modified a table field in Parties called Internet Details to have a column for the URL, and corresponding column for "web ID" which actually means Authority Idenitfier.
This was primaraly to link our collections up with other relevant content from the Party record in our Collections Online, eg. see under "External Links" for the artist Gordon Walters http://collections.tepapa.govt.nz/Party.aspx?irn=2391 and for Captain Cook http://collections.tepapa.govt.nz/party.aspx?irn=10800. At this stage these are "dumb", we manually enter them into EMu as we find them. We're looking at how we can automate the linking and creating some sort of authourty sharing (or a central authority) for NZ parties with our National Library, Archives, DNZB etc (a bit like People Australia http://www.nla.gov.au/initiatives/peopleaustralia/).
Anyway, first step for us will be to modify our Internet details table field to add a third column, so using Rembrandt (http://collections.tepapa.govt.nz/party.aspx?irn=1931) as an example, will be more like:
Row 1
- Website/Authority name (eg "ULAN")
- URL ("http://www.getty.edu/vow/ULANFullDisplay?find=500011051&role=&nation=&prev_page=1&subjectid=500011051")
- ID (eg "500011051")
Row 2
- Website/Authority name (eg "Wikipedia")
- URL ("http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rembrandt")
- ID (not sure wikipedia has IDs, so I guess would just be "rembrandt")
etc
At this stage we don't intend to bring any data from these other authorities back into EMu (to cut down on duplication), though of course we may update existing fields such as Bidth and death dates and places etc. Early days on how we do this this of course, but hope it is of some use/interest to you.

It's funny you should mention this as we have been having discussions at the NHM about standardising parties information.
Discussions actually stemmed from a sub group tasked with making recommendations for Lookup List values across all Modules. For both record entry and data cleansing the parties module, it was suggested that users should check the LC Names Authority (people and organisations) and populate the 'Organisation' and/or person names accordingly. Non-standard terms and anglicised translations (i.e. without diacritics) could be retained in the Other Names field.
I really wanted to make this process a little easier, so tried to set up a resource link (Tools --> Resource), which would automatically search LC Authority for the value entered into a specified field in EMu and open up the browser at the results page. Unfortunately the Library of Congress Authorities uses a PID in the URL (a unique code is created for each user session, that cannot be used again) which means that the Resource xml cannot be written to generate a URL that includes the search term. Instead the Resource can open at the LC Authorities search page.
If there is a way to circumnavigate the PID, I would be very interested to know.
Thinking about your idea, Karen, to record the LC Control Number and Te Papa's development, I wonder if there is some generic development that can be done here..?
Unique ID's are becoming increasingly more important for referencing, so I think the addition of a field to record this would enhance the 'Source of Information' already present.
Institutes may decide to choose one source of standard authority, but it is often the case that more than one source is required to cover the full scope of the actual data. Thus I think Te Papa's idea of having a tabulated set up is an interesting one, but may complicate things. One may decide to mark a row as being the 'preferred' value (in much the same way as the georeferencing grid in the Sites Module).
I don't know if others have a viewpoint on this..? Or indeed have a good methodology for standardising their party records by using approved authorities..?
