Happy New Year EMuUsers.Org! I have been leading a project to standardise the values in the lookup lists of the Materials tab in the Catalogue module. We are using the Conservation and Art Materials Encyclopaedia Online (CAMEO) developed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston by the Conservation and Collections Management Department as the standard with some ‘unique’ materials thrown into the mix. Museum Victoria has a generic Materials table (hierarchy of Primary, Secondary and Tertiary) and a Hazardous Materials table (hierarchy of Class, Primary and Secondary) on the one tab. We also have the Environment and Conditions tabs – both underutilised. We would like to be able to track the identification of a hazard from ‘suspected’ to ‘confirmed’ but would prefer not to use the Tasks tab. We have discussed adding a Status and Date field to the existing Hazardous Materials table and recording samples and tests in the Conservation module. In addition we will also be standardising how we record storage and handling instructions both for staff safety and object/specimen preservation. I am seeking guidance on two things: a)how other organisations record materials – hazardous and other; and b)whether other organisations have developed standards and associated work flows for recording materials in particular hazards? Do you have information that you would like to share? I look forward to hearing from you.
