Are any EMu Users using scripts or programs to upload and process batches of images? I am interested in learning about what other options might be out there other than the new Import tool. We have just implemented EMu, and we need to do batch processing of images on a regular basis. Thanks! Kara |

Hi Kara - We are using a batch import script that works in the following way: >> The Perl script imports files where the file name (minus the filename extension) matches a field value, i.e., the Photo Neg Number in our Botany catalog, or the barcode field (for instance, 12345.jpg). I can additionally set some blanket multimedia parameters to fill in for each image imported, for example, title, creator, description, keywords and source. I've done over 14400 like this and it works well. We have it configured so that it can be run from the server Linux command line, or as an Admin task. All the best, Joanna at FMNH |

Hi Kara not sure if exactly what you are after but you may be interested in knowing that KE have developed systems for Te Papa in New Zealand and The Powerhouse Museum in Sydney that allow users to upload multiple images to EMu from the EMu client. AFAIK Te Papa are using their system (I think Grant Smith from KE Melbourne is the person who would be able to give you more on this) The PHM system is not yet in operation (it is to be delivered as part of an upgrade and data load project to be done on new hardware they are setting up). PHM's is designed so users can simply copy files to a windows folder (eg by downloading from a digital camera) and then run an Admin task from the EMu client that brings up a simple dialog box where the user enters common field values that apply for all the images (creator, keywords etc). They then click the OK button on the dialog and the images are imported directly into EMu's multimedia module as records (with all the common field's set). I think the Te Papa one has extra bells and whistles that Grant could explain better than me. hope this of interest Jon -- Jonathan Kelly KE Software Pty Ltd http://www.kesoftware.com Tel: +61-2-9299-3077 Fax: +61-2-9299-8167 |

Hi Kara We have developed our own tool, which sounds similar to the one Jon has described. In addition to being able to enter data common to all images being uploaded, you can also source additional data from a spreadsheet so you can also upload data unique to each image. If an object registration number is included in the spreadsheet, it will use this to link the new image record with the appropriate Catalogue record. Forbes Hawkins Museum victoria |

Hi Kara The Te Papa import script is similar to that described by Jon Kelly (for PHM) in a previous email. The main difference is the creation of an intermediary Media Asset record (in the Catalogue) between a Multimedia Record and a Catalogue Object. Functionality is as follows: -Admin or Image managers copy scripts to a folder on the EMu server. These image files are named in a particular way - delimiters are used to indicate that the name is a registration number or an IRN number. Further delimiters in the file name indicate that there is embedded data in the file name to be onloaded into a new record. -Through an Admin task the Import script is run. As per previous posts, users are presented with a dialog box and fill in values that are onloaded to new Multimedia and new Media Asset records. -The script processes these images and creates a Multimedia record which is linked to a new Media Asset record (in the Catalogue) and both of these are then linked to an existing Catalogue Object (where it exists). -A report is provided for the user regarding the success or failure of the import. Hope this helps Regards Grant Smith KE Software |

I know this topic has come-up before and have seen the previous messages on the forum but the last of which was September 2006. We are looking at developing a tool or script that will make the batch-uploading of images as effective and pain-free as possible. We have more than 15,000 images to upload the vast majority of which the filename is its accession number so I hope that will help. I know that several institutions have already done similiar things but have adopted different methods/approaches and wondered whether there was any practical advice do's / dont's before we get to far along with this. We are looking at working with KE to define the process / requirements with a view to importing the images by the middle of October at the very latest. If any other institution has a similiar need and would be interested in sharing the development time/cost please contact me. many thanks Simon Simon Wilson Collections Project Manager, Hull Museums |
