Interested in Taxonomy – here’s some news!

Over the past few months of intensive (and hard) work, I am now in a position to bring our development of the taxonomy module to you. This first development cycle focuses on developments in line with ICZN.

You should find three attachments to this thread. I am afraid the documentation is in no way comprehensive. Neither document attached, or even the screen designs offer a true and complete picture of what we have implemented. If you have any questions, please email them to moa.programme@nhm.ac.uk.

Firstly, I have attached our screen designs. As the EMu tabs in our client do not exactly match, I will endeavour to post actual screenshots as soon as possible. I fyou download the powerpoint file you will be able to read the notes. These may offer an insight in the workings of the tabs.

Secondly, I have included a document written by Andrew Brown (KE Software) in consultation with my team. It is a high-level document which specifies our requirements for customisation of the taxonomy module.

The third document details the relationships between taxonomic names and the model Andrew used to display them.

Although we have now completed a major development cycle for this module, we are looking to have a limited number of minor improvements to the ICZN view implemented as soon as possible. I will inform you of those as they are finalised. In addition, in the coming months our Botany team will customise the module further. The result will be an ICBN centric view.

The taxonomy module (ICZN view) will also be presented and discussed at the KE EMu Natural History Users Group conference in Ottawa in late October 2006. If you require information on that meeting, email us on the address above. Feedback from other KE EMu users will then be consolidated to inform a full review of the Taxonomy Module. We are looking forward to receiving your comments and questions.

As promised in my previous posting, please find attached a document describing enhancements to the Taxonomy module ICZN view we are currently developing in London.

Once these changes have been implemented, I will post the relevant screenshots to this site. In the meantime, I am happy to answer any queries you may have.
